Welling United manager Warren Feeney wants team to build on draw with leaders Ebbsfleet at Braintree in National League South

Welling boss Warren Feeney wants to see an improved mindset from his players.

The Wings are the only team so far to have taken points off both leaders Ebbsfleet and second-placed Havant in National League South.

While all of Welling’s defeats have come against sides currently in the top eight, they’ve dropped points against teams they’d be expecting to beat - and were dumped out of the FA Cup at bottom-side Weymouth earlier this month.

It means Warren will be keen to see Welling build on their point at Ebbsfleet when they travel to Braintree in the league on Tuesday night.

“That’s the mindset,” said Feeney, when asked about Welling’s form against some of the lesser lights in the division. “You look at Man City, they don’t care who they play against, they go and beat them 5-0, 1-0, 10-0.

“That’s the mentality we’ve got to get. Some of them have played at great levels. Probably where we’ve started off so well, teams see us now as a scalp.”

Opposite number Dennis Kutrieb believed Welling produced their best display of the season to leave Stonebridge Road with a point having finished the game with nine men on Saturday.

But Feeney believes they were better in the 5-0 home demolition of Oxford City and the 1-0 away win versus Eastbourne.

“You can look at the Oxford game where we won 5-0 but the best for me this season was Eastbourne away, that was outstanding,” said Feeney.

“I love players defending, we had to defend on Saturday. I would love to have seen us with 11 players as I thought we took the game to them, and they were worried. With a bit more quality, we could have been two or three-up.

“We worked on the last two days of what I wanted but we’ve got good players who can take it on board. It was interesting before the game that Dennis said we’d done brilliantly because you’ve got 18 new players and it’s turning them around and getting the right mind in.

“They’ve got 15 players from last year, they’ve got a core and that’s what we want, we want a settled team here. The owners want to go in the right direction but it’s hard to bring that many players in and turn it around.”

Feeney continues to tinker with his squad. Tyrique Hyde was the latest departure from Park View Road, his brief stint after joining from Dartford in the summer has already ended after he linked up with Lewes.

The Wings boss wants to see more departures but it’s not always easy to move on players who are under contract.

“There’s going to be one or two more that hopefully we can get out but players have got contracts,” he confirmed.

“I was always one of them that couldn’t sit on the bench if I wasn’t playing, I wanted to play. I was one of those that would kick down the manager’s door every day, it’s pride. It’s not fun, I never heard that and that’s what I was told this week.”

Midfielder Taylor Mahoney and on-loan keeper Myles Roberts both missed the Ebbsfleet game through injury.

Roberts has received treatment from parent club Watford while Mahoney has a knee injury and has also been ill, so both players could miss out again in midweek.
