Relegation-threatened Welling picked up a much-needed win on Saturday – and then sacked manager Danny Bloor.

The Wings have spent most of the campaign in the National League South relegation zone and remain seven points from safety despite winning 2-1 at Hemel Hempstead.

But within hours of that victory, the Wings took the decision to axe Bloor. The decision was confirmed in a 114-word statement on Sunday morning.

“Welling United can confirm that Danny Bloor has left the club with immediate effect after being relieved of his duties as first-team manager,” said the statement.

“The club wishes to place on record its sincere gratitude for Danny and his team’s efforts this season.

“However, despite the win on Saturday, due to the team’s league position and recent league form being as it has been, the board have made the decision to change the management while there is still sufficient time in the season left for the required points to be obtained to, hopefully, secure National League South survival.

“The search for a new manager is under way with a full announcement to follow in due course.”

The win at Hemel Hempstead was Welling’s first in nine league games since a 4-1 home success over runaway leaders Yeovil.

Welling are also in the last 16 of the FA Trophy after beating a youthful Chesterfield side in round four. They host National League Barnet on February 10 in the Fifth Round.

The Wings sit 22nd in the table with 24 points from 28 games but, despite winning just five league games this season, Bloor retained the support of the majority of Welling fans.

Welling are due to host Hampton & Richmond on Tuesday.
