Dipo Akinyemi conceded Welling didn’t perform well enough after their National League South defeat at Tonbridge on Saturday.

The Wings remain bottom of the table, level on points with second-bottom Billerciay, after Tommy Wood’s first-half effort consigned them to defeat.

“It wasn’t good,” reflected the striker, who had netted six times in Welling’s last five away league fixtures prior to the weekend.

“We were really flat, the distances between each third were big, and we conceded another poor goal, like we have done all season.

“We have to just take it on the chin and move on to next week’s game against Ebbsfleet.”

The result moves Tonbridge six points ahead of Welling.

Asked about the importance of the encounter, Akinyemi replied: “It was very important because they are in and around us as well.

“I think we’ve found out that a lot of the other teams around us have lost, so it was big points dropped. Even if we had gone home with a point, all points matter, but we have gone home with nothing which is frustrating.

“We just have to go on next week, train hard and go on to next Saturday.”

Welling’s squad has been through plenty of change in the past month, with Northern Irishman Warren Feeney replacing former England manager Peter Taylor at the helm and Feeney bringing in a host of new players since his appointment.

Former Manchester United, Tottenham, Crystal Palace defender Zeki Fryers and forward Harvey Bradbury were latest Wings debutants at Longmead, with Akinyemi describing Fryers as "a top, top player".

“It’s tough when you have to make new relationships with people,” he conceded.

“A lot of the players haven’t played together in a match before. It’s just about trying to get familiar with what peoples’ strengths and weaknesses are.

“Like today, we had a new striker up top (Bradbury), a new left-back (Fryers) and Ade (Shokunbi) came back into the side.

“It’s tough but we have to keep grinding and treating every game like it’s a cup final, really.”
