A time of shock and distress - Archbishop
00:00, 13 September 2001
DR George Carey, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has spoken of his deep distress and sadness over Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the United States.
"I was appalled to learn of the terrible tragedies across the United States. The scale of the carnage and suffering is truly devastating," he said.
His thoughts, prayers and sympathies were with all those involved.
The Archbishop, president of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has been following developments closely and has been in personal touch with colleagues and friends in the United States.
He has called for prayer in response to the tragedy.
"This is a time of shock and deep distress. The suffering, devastation and loss of life touch us all.
"I hope that people of faith will take time to pray for those who are suffering in the aftermath of these terrible events.
"I am grateful to those churches able to remain open for private prayer and reflection."
