Sub-zero conditions are likely to continue through the week.

Weather forecasters say day-time temperatures will strugle to get above zero and at night they will plummet.

Farmer Tom Castle, who keeps records at Petham, recorded -7C on Monday night.

"We did have -8 one night last year but this is a longer spell," he said.

"The last few years have been very mild. There have been cold spells but nothing to get excited about."

In the big freeze of 1963 Mr Castle recorded -22 one night and -12 with a 25mph east wind during the day.

"If this year turns out like 1963 we have another six weeks of cold temperatures to go," he added.

Overnight snow greeted people returning to work and school on Monday.

While most main roads were open, side roads were affected by snow and ice.

Despite the weather there were no reports of any school closures in the area.

An appeal not to forget garden birds in the cold snap has come from the RSPB.

South East spokesman Hester Phillips said in freezing conditions, birds are more dependent on water provided in gardens.

"Most birds, especially small ones, need to drink at least twice a day. Being able to rely on supplies provided by gardeners can make a huge difference."

The RSPB suggests placing a ping pong ball, tennis ball or cork in unfrozen water in a bird bath. Movement of the items in the wind keeps the water agitated making it less likely to freeze.

Hester added: "Another good tip is to line your bird bath with a sheet or plastic or bin liner so that the ice can be lifted out each morning. You can then refill the bird bath with fresh water."
