Bob's regrets at the Bold Statement: read his blog to find out more
08:55, 07 October 2008
To be honest this week, I've been afraid to go out since I made the Bold Statement.
I'm now familiar with all the alleyways in Whitstable: Squeeze Gut, the Old Favourite, Coastguards, the small overgrown un-named ones previously only used by big boys on very small bikes making a fast getaway after leaving the scene of a misdemeanour. I travel them regularly, clad in black, hoodie pulled up over my face to avoid recognition and all because of the Bold Statement.
When I am caught in the glare of headlights and recognised I'm subjected to abuse, mockery and hand signals not found in the Highway Code.
Pubs are out. I can't drink in my home town because of the ridicule I'm regularly subjected to.
Sitting in the studio in the morning I quiver at having to pick up the phone just in case it's One of Them - and all because of that blasted Bold Statement.
At this point I think I should stop and explain before my nervous tic gets the better of me.
Cast your mind back to before August 16.
We went to Spain and banged in nine. We came back to England, played three games and banged in 13.
We played Celtic and scored two more, then Borussia Dortmund and scored three before finally thrashing Roma 5-0. In total 32 goals!
We were scoring for fun, the Glory Days were back and we were marching on!
So on the back of all of that I made the Bold Statement: Tottenham Hotspur will take over from Arsenal as THE team in North London this season.
Then, of course, it all went spectacularly wrong....
Every morning I'm subjected to headlines like Tottenham's worst start in 96 years, Tottenham, bottom of the league with only 2 points, What's going on at the Lane? Blah, blah, blah!
So now I have to suffer the ridicule of those Arsenal fans (and others) almost every day.
The bloke in the fruit shop in Whitstable, the small gooner baker next to the school, the warder from Brixton prison, the loft converters from Faversham, Oscar the hospital porter, the Canterbury cabbies, the passing trade and every Tom, Dick and Harry, they're all at it every day, needle, needle, needle.
And Talking of Harry and a bright spot in all this gloom, Harry says we'll be in the top five by the end of the season.
He's even had a bet to that end with his assistant at Portsmouth, Tony Adams.
Now there's a bloke who knows his football which is more than you can say for those currently in charge at the Lane.
Maybe we could persuade him to come in once manager Juande's departed and when that happens maybe Juande we might get the Glory days back, although to be honest I'm beginning to wonder whether they were all just an urban myth!
Feel free to call me this week on the kmfm breakfast show on kmfm from 7am - although I may be sometime answering the phone.
