A holidaymaker from Herne Bay has been savagely gored by a bull in a shocking attack captured on camera.

Tube worker Peter Mayne, of Stanley Gardens, needed 150 stitches and staples after he was mauled by the raging beast while on a family trip to Spain.

The 41-year-old had been enjoying the Bous al Carrer festival – Spanish for bulls in the street – when he was charged down by the half-ton animal while having his photo taken.

The footage shows him being tossed into the air as stunned onlookers rush to help and attempt to distract the frenzied bull, with one seen yanking its tail.

Piercing screams can be heard from a woman as Mr Mayne tries to wrestle the animal and grabs hold of its horns, but he is rolled across the street and thrown against metal rails, where he is pounded by the animal's powerful head.

The ordeal only ends when the crowd manages to pull him through the railings to safety, where he is seen lying on the floor in a crumpled heap as the video finishes.

He was then rushed to hospital for surgery after suffering serious wounds to his leg and one side of his body.

Mr Mayne's stepdaughter Hannah Chamberlain, 18, has relived the frightening ordeal.

She said: "He was having his photo taken when it happened.

"He thought the bull was nowhere near him. Then it turned around and ran.

"We couldn't see when it was happening but we knew it wasn't good. I was just scared.

"It was quite an open wound and he was in a lot of pain. Within 10 minutes he was leaving in an ambulance.

"Luckily, all his internal organs and arteries were missed."

Former soldier Mr Mayne and his wife Mandy, 43, remain in Calpe – 15 miles from Benidorm – more than two weeks after the attack on August 6 as he is still unable to fly home because of his injuries.

The couple celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary last week.

Canterbury College student Miss Chamberlain said: "I have spoken to him, but there has not been any change. He's just waiting to come home.

"He had about 150 stitches and staples and is still stuck in a wheelchair.

"He seems okay but there is no indication when he can leave. He cannot fly until his stitches have healed up because of the pressure."

In 2011, a 50-year-old Spanish man was killed by a bull at the same festival.
