A burglar who claimed a £100 refund for a pair of trainers he had stolen has been jailed for three years.

Aidan Lewis, from Wincheap in Canterbury, swiped the new Nikes - which were in a box with a receipt - from a property in the city.

The 26-year-old then met with a woman and the pair went to the store where the trainers were bought and claimed a £100 refund.

Lewis, who had only been released from prison less than four months before for a previous theft, was arrested four days after the offence in March and twice denied his involvement in police interview.

But CCTV footage showed him walking in Wincheap with a shoe box-shaped object hidden under his jumper.

Footage from the store then showed a woman, accompanied by Lewis, exchanging the shoes for cash.

He was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday after admitting the offence, where he offered no mitigation.

PC Peter Leeming said: "Lewis is a prolific offender who had been released from prison on December 16 after serving time for a previous theft offence.

"He showed no regard for his victim and initially denied any knowledge of the incident, despite there being clear evidence to the contrary.

"The sentence imposed is substantial and represents the threat he poses to society."
