Debutant centre Jay Udo-Udoma scored two tries as Canterbury bounced back from the previous week’s heavy defeat against Ealing to beat Bridgwater and Albion 31-18 in National League 2 South on Saturday.
They could not have asked for a better start as Bridgwater gifted them a try in the first minute after spilling a kick. Ed Roche snapped up the loose ball and scrum half Nicky Woodbridge finished off.
Seven minutes later a swift counter attack and crisp handling saw man of the Match Roche cross the line and Paul Gibson added his second conversion from wide out.
Two penalty goals from visiting full back Matt Richards reduced the lead to eight points by the break before a sharper looking Canterbury scored twice in the first nine minutes of second half.
Udo-Udoma scored their third try, chasing his own kick ahead, and Peter Kelly added the next, after a good break by fly-half Gibson.
Gibson’s conversion gave Canterbury a 20-point cushion and, after Richards had made a try for Bridgwater lock Dan Collier, Udo-Udoma claimed his second touchdown.
Bridgwater pressed in the late stages but not even a consolation try from Richards could prevent Canterbury extending their unbeaten home run to four matches.
