Canterbury Tory councillor Neil Baker on drink-drive charge
15:49, 12 December 2012
A leading Canterbury city councillor has been charged with drink-driving after crashing his car.
Tory Neil Baker, who sits on the executive committee of Canterbury City Council, was arrested after his blue Renault Clio left the road near the junction of Pean Hill and Bogshole Lane in Whitstable at 7.10pm last Wednesday.
The 30-year-old, of St Patrick’s Close, Whitstable, escaped the crash uninjured and was helped out of the car, which had become stuck between two trees.
Police were called to the scene and he was breathalysed. He was later charged with drink-driving and is due to appear in court on January 4.
Baker, whose girlfriend is expecting twins, was elected to the council last May and is chairman of the Canterbury Conservative Association.
He describes himself as a self-employed journalist and is director of the Bridge-based firm Cobasine, a new media development company.
City council leader John Gilbey said he was aware of Baker’s arrest but had yet to decide how it will affect his future with the party.
He said: “Neil has shown great support and done so much so it would be a shame to jump in too quickly and make a rash decision. Several questions have to be answered first.
“This week I will have to make up my mind, the group will have to make up its mind and so will the association.
“Neil is someone I regard as a very valuable member of our group.
“We will do what is necessary, but it will be compassionate and take into account what Neil wants.”
