Firefighters have cut the roof of a car after a crash outside their own fire station in a hit-and-run.

Crews were joined by police and an ambulance after the smash involving a black Peugeot in Herne Bay High Street at 12pm today.

The road was shut between New Street and William Street.

Incident commander Nick Salt, from Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to the crash after a car was rear-ended by an unknown vehicle which then drove off.

"Paramedics on the scene asked us to cut off the car's roof so that they could stabilise the woman who is in her mid-30s and is being treated for neck injuries. She was with her daughter."

Manny Singh, from the Right Choice newsagents, said: "I was working at the time of the crash which was right outside the shop.

"I heard a loud bang outside and saw a car had been hit from behind.

"The driver of the second car got out, picked up some bits from the road and then drove off."
