A bar and restaurant worker who drove her car home after drinking two large glasses of wine, overtook an ambulance, hit a kerb and ended up on top of a roundabout.

Isabella Obertelli was behind the wheel of her Kia Picanto when she overtook the emergency vehicle shortly after 1am on January 28, after finishing her shift at Cosy Club in St Margaret's Street, Canterbury.

The 20-year-old was spotted by paramedics overtaking them on Island Road in Hersden, but as she did so, her car then hit a kerb and ended up on top of a roundabout in the road.

Crews stopped their vehicle and checked her over at the scene, before informing the police.

When officers arrived, Obertelli admitted to them she'd had two large glasses of wine.

She was given a roadside breath test which proved positive and Obertelli, of Island Road, Upstreet, Canterbury, was later charged with drink-driving.

She admitted the offence when she appeared at Folkestone Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, March 1.

The court heard she gave a reading of 71 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Julie Farbrace, prosecuting, told the hearing Obertelli was of previous good character.

She said: "Police were called by the ambulance service who had seen a Kia overtake them and hitting the kerb near the roundabout and then the car ended up in the middle of the roundabout.

"They checked her over in the ambulance and she admitted to police she had drunk two large glasses of wine."

The court also heard Obertelli deeply regretted the incident, and had not felt she was over the limit.

District Judge Justin Barron banned Obertelli from driving for 18 months and fined her £200 and ordered her to pay a victim surcharge of £80 and £85 court costs.

If Obertelli completes a drink-driving course, her ban will be reduced by a quarter.
