Drunken yobs could be banned from parts of a city centre as part of a police crackdown on alcohol-related crime.

People who repeatedly cause trouble in Canterbury while under the influence of alcohol are to be targeted as part of the new scheme, named Last Orders.

As people return to enjoy pubs, bars and restaurants following the easing of pandemic restrictions, police warn that those who are repeatedly arrested in the city centre between 6pm and 6am could face increased sanctions.

They will be referred to supportive agencies and given advice on how they can improve their behaviour.

But frequent arrests for alcohol-related offences will lead to offenders being issued with a Community Protection Notice (CPN), which can bar them from entering certain parts of the city at specific times.

Breach of a CPN is an offence and could lead to repeat offenders being brought before a court.

Officers are working with Canterbury City Council and business groups Canterbury District Watch and Canterbury Business Improvement District (BID) to ensure the city remains a "safe and pleasant place to visit" and to warn that violence and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.

Inspector Guy Thompson, of Canterbury Community Safety Unit, said: "Canterbury is a safe place to live, work and visit and Kent Police is determined to keep it that way.

"We want everyone who wishes to visit to the city and enjoy the vibrant night-time economy to do so. However, we will not tolerate those who come and commit offences while under the influence of alcohol.

"I hope the actions we are taking this summer will deter those who might do so from coming to city, maintaining it as a safe and welcoming place for those who wish to have a good time."
