An iconic piece of street art painted 35 years ago has been restored after it was destroyed in an arson attack.

The artwork by Lief Bruylant was commissioned in 1986 on the side of a building in Castle Street, Canterbury, which is now home to burger restaurant The Notorious BRG.

But the previous occupant, Naughty Egg, was targeted by a devastating arson attack in May 2019, which destroyed half of the building, including the mural.

However, Notorious BRG owner Jonny Wall was determined to restore the famous work when he took over months after the blaze.

He had originally set-up a fundraiser and tried to contact a number of artists to see if they could help.

But he actually managed to make contact with the original artist - who restored the piece last week

The mural depicts a person wearing a beret swaying on a ladder as they attempt to paint 'No' on the wall.

Mr Wall, 33, said: "It’s a very familiar landmark in Canterbury and I think people know Castle Street predominantly because of it.

"We get a lot of people coming into the shop asking what happened to it.

"Obviously we have graffiti but there isn’t a tremendous amount of street art to appreciate, so I thought it was very important to restore it."

Mr Wall previously worked as a chef at the Naughty Egg before it was set alight.

The owner is determined to make sure the mural is not destroyed again and is taking measures to ensure it can be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come.

He is going to apply a clear resin to protect the artwork from graffiti.

A motion sensitive light will also be installed so people can see it at night but to also deter taggers, and CCTV will also be put up.

"I don’t think someone is going to try and set fire to the building again, but the real risk is graffiti because there is quite an issue in the city at the moment.

"After that wall was destroyed, it was targeted.

"It was there for a very long time without being defaced so I would hope there is a level of respect and understanding among taggers to leave it be."
