A heatwave could be on the way for Kent as weather experts expect temperatures to soar.

The mercury is predicted to exceed 30C this weekend and could even reach a sweltering 33C in the southeast on Sunday, according to the Met Office.

A yellow heat health alert has been issued in the south east, which is the lowest warning the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) can issue.

However, the warm weather could impact those who are 65 and above or those with pre-existing health conditions.

Earlier this week, thunderstorms and heavy rain battered Kent following the recent higher temperatures.

On Sunday, the Met Office is currently predicting Gravesend and Dartford will reach 28C.

Canterbury, Whitstable, Gillingham, Faversham and Sheerness could see highs of 27C.

Meanwhile, the mercury will reach 26C in Margate, Ashford and Tunbridge Wells.

Dover could hit 25C while Folkestone may see highs of 24C.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Almond said: “After some thundery showers in central and eastern England on Thursday, the UK is transitioning to a more typical weather pattern through the weekend, with high pressure to the south and the influence of low pressure further north and west, albeit with some very warm or hot air in the south and east at first.

“Official heatwave criteria could be met for parts of southern and eastern England, with temperatures most likely to peak in the low 30s on Sunday in the southeast, but even elsewhere the temperature could still reach the high 20s.

“Temperatures will likely remain quite high overnight, so it’s important to look out for those who may be more vulnerable to heat.”

A yellow heat health alert will come into force tomorrow at 9am and will be in place until Monday at 9am.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: “This heat health alert means that in the coming days we are likely to experience another period of hot weather, so it’s important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.

“Forecast temperatures this week could primarily impact those over the age of 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions.

“If you have friends, family or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice.”
