An image taken this morning shows the lorry caught between Union Road and the High Street.

It is unclear how the driver became stuck, but it is thought he may have tried to turn around by reversing down the street.

An eyewitness said: "I drive artic lorries and I would never have attempted that – he was never going to get out of there.

"To be honest I'm surprised he got as far as he did but I've not got a clue how he's supposed to get out."

A number of social media users echoed the sentiment, with one adding: "It almost looks like his sat-nav has sent him in the wrong direction. Very strange!"

Following more than an hour and a half of delays, the vehicle was reversed down Union Street to clear the High Street.

A witness, who asked not to be named, said: "It caused absolute chaos while it was here – it looked like the driver didn't have the expertise to get out of the situation.

"In the end, another driver – I'm guessing from the same company, as they knew each other – reversed it down the side street and away."

This is the second lorry-based issue to occur in the Canterbury area today.

Another HGV caused chaos in the city this morning after breaking down under the railway bridge at the Pin Hill junction in Wincheap.

The impeded vehicle blocked the majority of the road near Canterbury East station, next to the former Round House pub with traffic reportedly heading back to Chartham on the A28.

Traffic became so heavy around the ring-road that police officers were forced to attend to direct motorists around the obstruction.

The obstruction has now been removed and traffic is clearing.
