ROOMS are being found for first years who arrived at the University of Kent at Canterbury to find themselves homeless after a record intake of students.

First year students have now generally been found accommodation on-site and this week undergraduates previously promised accommodation began gradually filtering back onto the campus as rooms were found for them.

There are still some students who will remain in bed and breakfast accommodation at the university's expense until the end of the week, but UKC says it is confident the problem is being brought under control.

Best-ever A Level results led to a crisis in the accommodation offices of universities all over the country as more students than usual achieved the grades needed to meet conditional offers of a place.

As first years and undergraduates arrived at the UKC campus for the start of the new term last week, the situation was one of chaos as queues built outside the accomodation office and rooms promised to returning undergraduates were allocated to arriving first years.

The University launched an urgent appeal for offers of private accommodation and homeless students were temporarily housed in bed and breakfast or hotel accommodation.

A University spokesman said: "We have had a lot of responses to our appeal for private accommodation, which is very helpful. There are still people moving about internally but we are confident everyone will be housed and help is being made available at the accommodation office."
