A couple involved in a horror crash that ground Canterbury to a standstill have died just days apart.

Devoted Anthony and Brenda Delsignore were both seriously injured following the accident at the Tourtel Road roundabout.

The couple, who lived in Sturry, were described as being "inseparable" and family members are planning a joint funeral.

Mr Delsignore, 81, had been in a coma since the accident and lost his fight for life on June 7, while his wife Brenda died after a stroke on Saturday.

Retired builder Mr Delsignore was driving with his wife in a blue hatchback that careered into the roundabout at 7.20am on March 15. It brought much of central Canterbury to a standstill.

Witnesses reported seeing the couple's car travelling along the road when it struck the roundabout and flipped over.

They did not believe it was speeding and police were not certain how the accident had happened.

Firefighters cut the roof off the car and the couple were taken to King's College Hospital, in south London, with serious arm and leg injuries.

Mr Delsignore was described as being in a critical condition and went into a coma, while 77-year-old Mrs Delsignore was later released and allowed to return to the bungalow they shared on the A28 Island Road.

One of six siblings aged between 68 and 83, Mr Delsignore was eventually transferred to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.

His brother Ray Delsignore, 83, of London Road in Deal, last visited him a month ago and said: "He was not in a good way."

His sister Mollie Hudson, 74, who lives in Canterbury Road near Chilham, said: "They were inseparable. We had to cancel the funeral, which had been due to take place on July 3, because Brenda died.

"It was given as a natural death. It was a stroke, but I really think she died of a broken heart.

"I think we will now have a double funeral. This is a bad time for us. At least they are together now."

The couple were married for nearly 58 years, but did not have any children. Mrs Delsignore worked for many years at a printers in Harbledown called Jennings before moving on to a variety of other jobs.

An inquest into the death of Mr Delsignore was opened by east Kent coroner Rebecca Cobb on June 14 and adjourned.

It will be subject to a full hearing later in the year. If it is considered that Mrs Delsignore died from natural causes, no inquest will be held.
