Baroness Shami Chakrabarti has pulled out of a Labour manifesto launch event in Kent.

The shadow Attorney General was set to appear at Thanington Resource Centre in Canterbury this afternoon as the party unveiled its intentions ahead of next month's local elections.

But the human rights campaigner has not travelled to the county due to illness and therefore will not speak at the event.

The local Labour group are instead launching their manifesto without her in attendance.

Meanwhile, in the Tory camp, chairman of the Canterbury Conservatives Association has torn into Theresa May by blasting the Prime Minister's leadership in a letter sent to members.

In the letter, Greig Baker said: "I am angry as anyone about events in Westminster this week.

"My personal view is that the prime minister's approach is unedifying, infuriating and destructive in equal measure."

The heavy criticism for the under-fire Prime Minister comes after she decided to discuss options with Jeremy Corbyn over the everlasting Brexit deadlock.

Mr Baker goes on to state he will continue to serve the party, saying there are still "good" Tory MPs who continue to "make the case for true Conservative values".

He also says he has faith in the "excellent" candidates for May's local elections.

Just this morning, all of the candidates for the 39 council seats in Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable were released.
