A Canterbury groundworks firm had to work through the night to build a new circuit in time for the new Top Gear series.

The family-run Ovenden Allworks, based in Aylesham, helped modify the original circuit into a fresh rallycross track over a number of weeks.

The circuit – which was completed a month before the first episode went on air – is used by the show’s celebrity guests as they compete for the fastest time.

Company director Tristan Ovenden, 41, said: “It was a tight schedule but overall it took around a month to six weeks to complete.

“We had to work through the nights to gain access to the track because it is used every day and hired out.”

As well as being host to the famous Top Gear track, Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey is still a live airport.

Mr Ovenden, who competes in the British Rallycross Championship, added: “Being at a live airport was another difficulty but we were still able to complete the job on schedule.

“It is a fun track. It offers something different for the celebrities away from a conventional tarmac circuit - they’ll enjoy it.”

Mr Ovenden, who is a double Swift Sport Rallycross Championship winner, took his car to the circuit to try it out.

He added: “I tested out the jump and the track in my old rallycross car and we’re pleased with the result.

“I’m glad the organisers chose the rallycross format as it is a sport that is on the up and it is definitely getting more well known.”

Ovenden Allworks worked closely with designers and racing father and son duo Pat and Liam Doran - who own the Lydden Hill Race Circuit - to develop the track.

On Sunday’s episode, Wingham’s Paul Hollywood was the latest celebrity to try the circuit alongside Jennifer Saunders.

The TV baker set a competitive time in wet conditions having previously been given tuition at Brands Hatch by rallying instructors.

Top Gear will air at 8pm on Sunday on BBC Two.
