Two historic towns in Kent have topped a list of the most 'Instagrammed' places in the country.

The list identifies the historic towns in the UK that are most photographed on picture app Instagram - with Canterbury being named number 16 out of 25.

The Cathedral city was inhabited by the Romans in the 1st century AD, who named it Durovernum Cantiacorum and built an impressive network with new streets, a theatre, a temple and public baths.

Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular tourist destination.

Dover, famous for its White Cliffs, was placed at number 20.

The list was compiled by HomeToGo who used online history resources to identify hundreds of British towns and cities that were founded in the 17th century or earlier.

The final 25 are the destinations that have the most Instagram hashtags, as of August 2019.

Canterbury was revealed to have 795,000 hashtags, beating Exeter, Bath and Warwick.

Dover had 470,000 hashtags.

Unsurprisingly, London came number one, followed by Edinburgh, Bristol, York and Cambridge.

Lincoln, Winchester, Chester, Durham, Norwich and Windsor also secured places on the list.

Of the 25 locations, England had the highest number of historical cities on the list, with a total of 21.

Scotland secured two spaces, followed by Northern Ireland and Wales, who had just one spot each.

But not all hashtagged posts were quite as they seemed.

The above picture claiming to be taken in Dover with an accompanying caption suggesting it shows the famous white cliffs, was in fact taken Old Harry Rocks in Dorset.

Micheal Lee, from HometoGo, a holiday rental search engine, said: "The UK has a unique, diverse and fascinating history, and so it’s no surprise that many Brits are choosing to spend the final warm summer weekends visiting the historic towns that are right on their doorsteps.

"We’re excited to showcase these beautiful and photogenic destinations!"
