Long-serving councillor Jenny Samper from Whitstable has died.
The Conservative councillor, who represented residents in the Chestfield ward, is believed to be one of the longest serving councillors at Canterbury City Council.
Despite a four-year gap in the 90s, the former primary school deputy head teacher had been a councillor since she was first elected in 1976. She was Lord Mayor of Canterbury twice.
Colleagues have left tributes on social media.
The council tweeted: "Earlier today we received the very sad news that Cllr Jenny Samper has died.
"Cllr Samper represented the Chestfield ward and served as Lord Mayor twice having first been elected in 1976.
"Most recently Cllr Samper chaired the council's Planning Committee.
Chief executive Colin Carmichael said: "Jenny had an unrivalled dedication to public service and was always determined to stand up for the residents in her ward.
"Her razor-sharp intellect meant she quickly got to the nub of any issue.
"Her passing is a huge loss."
