Plans to close a stretch of the London bound carriageway on the M2 tonight and tomorrow have been postponed.
It comes amid traffic chaos on the adjoining A2 and the M20/A20 due to high volumes of holidaymakers heading to the Port of Dover for the continent.
A resurfacing project is taking place between junction 7 with the A2 at Brenley Corner for Canterbury and Faversham and junction 5 with the A247 for Sittingbourne, Sheppey and Maidstone.
The road closed last night and reopened at 6am this morning ahead of the Whitstable Oyster Festival.
It was expected to close again at 8pm tonight (Saturday) and remain shut for the whole of tomorrow.
Highways England had advised port bound traffic to use the M20 during the resurfacing work closures.
But with the Dover TAP traffic calming measures in place for most of today, queues stretched beyond junction 13 of the M20 and motorists reported on social media that they were stationary for two hours.
Meanwhile P&O Ferries pledged to lay on more sailings to remedy its delays of up to three hours - a backlog that was due to a technical issue on Thursday.
Highways England have not released whether the delays on the M20 are the reason for the roadworks' postponement.
