Drivers travelling along the A2 in need of a caffeine fix could soon be able to take a break at a new coffee shop.

A “major national chain” is set to run a bespoke outlet to be built next to the Travelodge hotel at the London-bound Gate Services between Canterbury and Faversham.

The official plans, which include a drive-thru facility, have been submitted to Swale Borough Council for approval.

If given the go-ahead, developers say nine jobs will be created and 25 extra parking spaces installed.

The origins of Gate Services date back to the 18th century when it was a coaching inn. Since then it has evolved into a multi-functional service station with a five-pump Esso garage and hotel.

But trade has slumped since Shelia’s Kitchen restaurant, which was formerly a Little Chef, closed for business.

It is hoped the new 183sqm coffee shop will fill the trading void at the site.

A report compiled by JMS Planning & Development states: “The addition of a coffee shop on the site is the next stage in the site’s evolution.

“It is important that adequate facilities are provided for road users to ensure that their basic needs are met and enable them to comfortably and safely continue their journeys.”

As well as thirsty motorists, travellers at the nearby Brotherhood Wood caravan park and locals living in surrounding villages including Dunkirk and Boughton will be encouraged to use the new premises. There will be indoor and outdoor seating and pastries will also be sold.

Applicants Motor Fuel Limited say the shop - which will have a timber-clad design - will open from 5am until 11pm. A 24-hour opening is being sought.

It isn’t known which firm will be running the store, but documents attached to the planning application allude to a “major coffee shop operator”.
