Extra police with additional powers have been scrambled following reports of teenagers clashing in a trouble-hit park.
Police will now be able to order groups in Canterbury city centre to disperse for the next 48 hours – with those falling foul of such requests facing potential arrest.
It comes after reports of a group of teenagers approaching other youths in both the Dane John Gardens and city wall areas on Monday and Tuesday.
It is alleged the instigators were attempting to steal the belongings of those they approached, incidents which are currently under investigation.
Officers are working to identify those involved.
In response, extra patrols will be carried out in the area in the coming days and a 48-hour dispersal order has been imposed to deter those who may be intent on carrying out offences.
From 3pm on Wednesday March 27 until 3pm on Friday March 29, officers will have extra powers to disperse groups in the city centre and arrest those who refuse to comply.
Inspector Paul Stoner said: “There is no place for anti-social behaviour in Canterbury, or anywhere else in Kent, and our officers will be taking robust action against anyone found to be causing problems for others.
“The extra officers brought in to the city this week will be stopping and speaking to any groups seen acting suspiciously with the aim of preventing further offences from occurring.”
Anyone with information about the incidents in Dane John Gardens on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 March is urged to call Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting reference 46/48465/24.
