Whitstable has been overrun with food-lovers and revellers as huge crowds soak up the sun for the town’s Oyster Festival.
Percussion band Samba Pelo Mar welcomed people to the beach on Saturday as they gathered to see the traditional landing of the oysters.
The attention then turned to the streets, as bands and the Whitstable Giant paraded through the town.
Today punters will enjoy a dog show in Marine Crescent, a tug of war on Beach Walk and an oyster eating challenge in the harbour.
The Mayor of Canterbury Cllr Heather Taylor officially open the event yesterday as 2nd Whitstable Sea Cadets leaders Mike Keam, Lee Sully and Neill Austen the carried oysters ashore.
Mr Sully said: “It’s a good traditional event. It is great for tourism and lots of people help out to make it a good day.”
Revellers also enjoyed seafood and markets around the harbour, as well as a beer festival at the East Quay Bar.
Natalie Williams, who grew up in Whitstable and now lives in Kingston, said: “I come back every year for the festival.
“I love the oysters and it is a really nice community activity. It is such a tradition. It is a really happy time for Whitstable.
“I don’t think I have ever seen it this busy. It brings lots of business to the town.”
Carl Morgan, 50, from Margate, said: “I have really enjoyed it. The crowds are mad but we have had really good weather.
“The whole atmosphere is nice to see. It could do with some more parking though.”
