Cold calling phone scam in Canterbury
16:49, 15 November 2019
A cold calling scam which led to an elderly man being defrauded has sparked police to issue advice.
The victim from Canterbury received an unsolicited phone call from a man claiming to be from a well-known drainage company.
The caller said urgent repair work was needed on his drain otherwise his property would flood.
The elderly victim transferred money over the phone in exchange for services that have not been delivered.
Two days later, the same suspect called to request more funds, which were not transferred.
Inspector Guy Thompson said: "This is an unscrupulous offence and we are conducting ongoing enquiries to establish the full circumstances.
"People involved in this type of offending are speculative and opportunistic and unfortunately tend to target elderly people, or those who they believe to be vulnerable.
"I would encourage residents to be vigilant of cold callers and to try not to feel pressured into handing over personal details or money. Instead, quickly end any call they are suspicious of before contacting the police on 101 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040."
Anyone with information should call 01843 222289 quoting 46/218445/19.
