Pioneering radio station set to be launched
00:00, 30 March 2006
STUDENTS in a Kent city will soon be able to tune into their own radio network.
The station, the first non-profit making students’ union fronted radio station in the country, goes on air from September in Canterbury.
The project is the result of collaboration between the students' unions at the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University.
It has been granted a five-year community licence to broadcast from Ofcom, the independent communications authority.
The scheme was explained in full at a meeting of students at Westgate Hall, Canterbury on Monday.
The station will be lead and managed entirely by student and youth volunteers.
The radio frequency will not be known for three months but the broadcasts will be heard on the FM band.
