A walk-in vaccine site with "no queue" is urging people to drop in for a Covid booster today.

On Monday, dozens of people hoping to have their third jab were lined up outside the vaccine hub at the Sea Cadets base in Vauxhall Road, Canterbury.

It came after the Prime Minister announced on Sunday that the target for giving every adult in England a booster jab has been brought forward by a month after the emergence of the Omicron variant.

But a new heated marquee was delivered to the Vauxhall Road site last night, which has doubled its capacity.

The advice that people should wait on-site for a 15-minute observation period after receiving a vaccine has also temporarily been scrapped in a bid to increase through-flow and speed up the booster roll-out.

This afternoon, Vauxhall Road site manager Susan Joyner said: "The hub had a new marquee erected last night and we have doubled our capacity, to such an extent our walk in queue is empty currently.

She urged people to "come down for their booster today".

The site is open for walk-ins between 9am and 4pm between now and December 23.

That is except this weekend, when walk-in appointments will run from 8.30am to 5pm.

On Sunday, Boris Johnson said Britain “must urgently reinforce our wall of vaccine protection” as he warned of a “tidal wave of Omicron” that could cause “very many deaths”.

Local vaccination centres are now racing to administer third doses to thousands of adults across the district in the next 15 days - which GPs have branded "a huge challenge".

Whitstable GP John Ribchester said: "If we’re to achieve the Prime Minister’s target, the only way it’s going to happen is by mass vaccination centres or new pop-up centres doing the shortfall."
