Rheims Way in Canterbury shut by police after person hit by lorry

A woman has been flown to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a lorry on a busy dual carriageway in Canterbury.

The main route leading into the city is closed in both directions while police deal with the aftermath of the serious incident.

Four police cars and five ambulances were called to the scene, and the air ambulance landed in the nearby Victoria Recreation Ground.

The collision happened between the London Road and St Peter's roundabouts just before 11am.

The patient, a woman in her 40s, was airlifted to a London hospital for further treatment for serious injuries.

The helicopter was seen taking off at about 12.30pm.

Traffic stretched back along the city ring road and clogging up Wincheap.

Drivers heading out of the city were being diverted to St Peter's Place and through Westgate Towers to St Dunstan's Street.

However, the road reopened in both directions shortly after 1pm.

Four police cars and five ambulances were on the scene.

A spokesman for the force said: "Kent Police was called at 10.58am yesterday following a collision involving an HGV and a pedestrian in Rheims Way, Canterbury.

"The pedestrian, a woman in her 40s, suffered a serious leg injury and was airlifted to a London hospital for treatment.

"The road was closed until around 12.45pm. There were no arrests."

It is understood the woman's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A South East Coast Ambulance spokesman added: "I can confirm we are at the scene of a serious RTC on Rheims Way, reported to us at approximately 11am today.

"The Kent, Surrey, Sussex Air Ambulance Service has joined us at the scene."
