The fire service warned all residents in the area to shut their doors and windows and earlier advised people to find alternative routes following the incident in The Street.

Adisham Road (B2046), Pond Lane and Spinney Lane were all closed but the B2046 was later reopened.

Eight fire engines were called at 6.42pm yesterday assisted by crews from a bulk water carrier and technical rescue specialists.

A fire service spokesman said: "Please share this information with loved ones and neighbours in the local area who may not have access to the internet.

"There are no reported injuries."

At 2.35pm, KFRS said work had finished. A statement said: "Firefighting operations in The Street, Womenswold, near Canterbury are now complete and roads that were closed have been reopened.

"There is no longer a need to keep windows and door closed. Thanks for your patience and cooperation."
