Simon Langton Girl’s Grammar in Canterbury sends out warning after man ‘asked teen to get in car’

A school is warning parents and students after reports a suspicious man asked a 17-year-old if she would like to “be his friend” and get in his car.

Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School in Canterbury emailed parents today to make them aware of the incident, which happened nearby in Old Dover Road at 11.30am on Thursday.

The message reads: “We have been requested by the police to make you aware of an incident in Old Dover Road, in the vicinity of the traffic lights near the cricket ground, where a teenager was approached by a gentleman in a car.

“They were asked a number of questions about whether they wanted to be his friend and if they wanted to get in his car.”

They go on to say police are investigating the event, which happened near Sainsbury’s Local, and remind students to “be aware of their surroundings”.

The email continues: “Remember to report any suspicious activity.

“Should an unwanted approach occur at any time, students should dial 999 and, where possible, seek support in a shop or place of refuge.

“This message has also been shared with students.”

A police spokesman said: “At around 11.30am on Thursday 14 September 2023, a man reportedly asked a 17-year-old girl if she wanted to get into his car in Old Dover Road, Canterbury.

“The girl left the area and the incident was reported to Kent Police.

“Enquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing and anyone with information should call 01843 222289, quoting reference 46/165269/23.”

The school did not comment further when contacted by KentOnline.
