Schools closed and rubbish collections halted by snow - and there's more to come
07:48, 02 February 2009
Snowfall on Monday morning led to the closure of Canterbury College and suspension of rubbish collections.
The Orchard School in Canterbury also closed as did Simon Langton Girls' School and Kingsmead leisure centre.
Canterbury Crown Court was also affected and stopped sitting during the morning until Wednesday.
Canterbury City Council suspended all refuse collections.
Bosses at Street Scene took the decision following snow flurries across the district.
All garden waste collections have also been suspended this week, to make sure refuse lorries are available to help clear the back-log.
“We’ve taken the decision for the both the health and safety of our staff and the general public,” said Street Scene manager Chris Wallis.
“Refuse vehicles can weigh anything up to 26 tonnes, so having one of those sliding around the roads isn’t a great idea.”

He added: “We will continue to collect landfill waste and recycling bags as soon as the conditions permit and our advise to people is to continue leaving their bags out as normal and we’ll endeavour to get round to them as soon as possible.”
