Shock as young father Luke Leggatt’s body found in driveway in Canterbury
00:01, 23 December 2016
A young dad who collapsed and died in a quiet Canterbury cul de sac was expecting his second child.
Luke Leggatt, who was in his 20s, was found lying on a driveway off St Lawrence Close at just after 7am last Wednesday morning.
He had superficial facial injuries consistent with a fall, and it is understood that his death is not being treated as suspicious.
Flowers have been laid in the driveway close to where Luke was found as well as outside the home he shared with his mother at Devon Road on the Spring Lane Estate.
Speaking to the Gazette this week, his mother, Patricia Mitchell, said: “We have been told that Luke may have suffered a seizure.
“He’s with the coroner right now and I haven’t even been able to see him yet.
“He worked hard, but he also used to like to go out and paint the town red”
“I just wish I had answers as to how he had gone.”
Luke came from a large family and had three brothers and two sisters.
Patricia revealed Luke was due to become a dad for the second time. He is already father to Scarlett, four, and worked as a gas engineer.
“He worked hard, but he also used to like to go out and paint the town red,” Patricia said.
“I will remember him as I last saw him singing My Darling Clementine. He always sang My Darling Clementine to me.”
Luke was well known on the social scene in Canterbury, and ventured out with friends as far as The Local in Cockering Road, Chartham.
Villager Jason Waugh said: “I used to see him in the pub, and everyone thought he was a nice lad. He was a very sociable and bubbly lad and always seemed like he was having fun.”
Police and the ambulance were called to St Lawrence Close at 7.05am last Wednesday.
They declared Luke dead at the scene. It is thought he may have been making his way home from the Kent and Canterbury Hospital.
Police have passed their findings on to the coroner, and inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding his death. Neither the coroner nor police would release any further information.
