Six people have been taken to hospital after a horrific crash at a rural crossroads outside Canterbury.

A van and taxi collided at the junction of Bramling Road and Adisham Road in Bekesbourne shortly after 8am.

The ambulance service says the accident left six people, all believed to be male, injured.

One patient, thought to be a boy, was airlifted to King's College Hospital in south London suffering from hand and abdomen injuries.

Four of the other five patients were taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford with a fifth taken to Medway.

They had suffered various injuries to the neck, arm and chest.

Police closed the road immediately after the accident as fire crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to release two people trapped in one of the vehicles.

Sara O'Brien, whose house sits on the junction, says it is a notorious accident blackspot.

The 34-year-old said: "There have been numerous accidents at this junction over many years.

"I went out to have a look and could see that it was a horrific smash. I fear there will be further accidents in the future as the signs approaching the junction are inadequate."

Police reopened the road at 11.30am.
