TWO soldiers of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment were injured when their vehicles came under rebel fire.

One is seriously injured and has been evacuated to Britain where he is being treated in hospital. The other is being treated for less serious injuries to the neck and head in Iraq.

The families of both men, whose names and ages have not been released by the Ministry of Defence, have been made aware of the circumstances.

The regiment has been stationed at Canterbury’s Howe Barracks since October and departed for Iraq in January. The family of one of the injured men lives at the barracks on St Martin’s Hill.

The men were in two vehicles that were travelling towards Basra on Tuesday night when they came under rebel fire from grenades and a petrol bomb. Both vehicles were destroyed in the attack. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment is stationed at a number of locations around the southern city of Basra.
