KENT pentathlete Georgina Harland has capped a remarkable season by being named as the Sunday Times Student Sportswoman of the Year.

The 23-year-old from Waltham, near Canterbury, said she was "completely lost for words" after receiving her prize in London from Olympic boxing champion Audley Harrison.

Harland, who is studying geography at Loughborough University, finished the year ranked as the world's No 2 senior behind British team-mate Steph Cook, who has now retired. As well as taking an individual bronze at the World Championships in Bath, Harland was also a member of the winning women's relay team.

She won a team gold at the European Championships and was fourth in the World Cup final, having secured several wins in qualifying. Nominations for the Times awards were made by the public, although Harland only knew she was in the running about two weeks before the lunch.

LITTLEBOURNE'S Amy Garnett also picked up an award at the lunch as a member of the England's women's rugby squad which won Sport England Team of the Year. England finished the domestic season unbeaten, and also inflicted the first defeat for 10 years on New Zealand as they drew the series 1-1.
