Gas leak closes Wingham High Street sparking diversions and school run travel warning
12:00, 14 June 2015
Diversions are in place and parents are being warned to make alternative travel plans for tomorrow's school run after a gas leak closed Wingham High Street.
The street was closed this morning so engineers could make emergency repairs after a member of the public smelt gas.
Bus operator Stagecoach has alerted parents via twitter that their service from Staple, just outside Wingham, will be interrupted tomorrow until at least midday.
SGN spokesman James Higgins said: "We are carrying out emergency repair works in High Street, Wingham.
"A member of the public did the right thing and reported a smell of gas this morning to the National Gas Emergency Number 0800 111 999.
"We attended the site quickly and made safe. For everyone’s safety we have had to put a road closure in place between the junctions of Staple Road and Canterbury Road.
"A signed diversion is in place. We will be working extended hours to make our repair as quickly as possible.
"We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating and would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
"We would like to thank everyone for their patience while we carry out our essential works.”
