An off-duty police officer suffered injuries to his face as he tried to break-up an assault at about 3.20am on Friday, February 11.

The officer was in St George's Street, near to McDonald's and Superdrug, when he saw two people push a man to the ground and kick him several times.

He jumped in to break up the attack, before getting punched in the face himself.

Following an appeal for witnesses last week, police have now made two arrests.

A 32-year-old man and a 31-year-old man, both from the Canterbury area, have been arrested on suspicion of assault.

The pair have since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The early morning attack is one of a number of violent incidents to take place in Canterbury's city centre in the past year.
