Two people have been arrested at a railway station on suspicion of child neglect.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called to Canterbury East station earlier today after Southeastern staff and members of the public reported “grave concerns” over the way the children were being treated.

Officers met the train and a man and a woman were arrested, the force reported online.

The children were then placed under a police protection order – an emergency measure made if a child is believed to be at risk of significant harm.

Such an order sees them placed under police protection in a safe location for up to 72 hours without the need for a court order.

A BTP spokesperson confirmed on social media that contact had been made with social services to arrange a safe place for the children while investigations continue.

The force says the case has now been handed to detectives in its criminal investigation department.

BTP has been contacted for more information.
