Two new fast-food takeaways on the edge of Canterbury are poised to open next year.

Developers have gained planning permission to build a Taco Bell off Sturry Road, while fresh proposals for a different business in Wincheap have been unveiled this week.

The long-empty Carphone Warehouse, which sits between Morrisons and the vacant Argos on the Wincheap Retail Park, is set for a change of use.

Applicants want to convert the site into a takeaway employing 14 staff members.

The identity of the tenant is being kept under wraps, but planning documents submitted to the city council suggest it will be a fast food operator.

Interior and exterior seating are both proposed, but developers say the majority of customers will drive in, park up and leave with their takeaway order.

Should the scheme gain permission and come to fruition, it would be the first time a food outlet has taken on one of the units at the retail park.

The site, built in 2000, has always been occupied by retail tenants - but is looking increasingly deserted following the departure of Carphone Warehouse, Argos and Mothercare.

The triple-headed absence has left a void and the empty units have each been on the market for at least 15 months.

Due to the expansive 520-space car park, applicants say the site will be able to cater for a new eatery, A transport assessment accompanying the planning application also stresses how there would be with limited impact on the surrounding road network as a result of the business opening.

Proposals for the store’s change of use are set to be determined next month.

On the other side of Canterbury, Glenbeigh Developments has now secured the go-ahead to open a trade park featuring a branch of American fast-food giant Taco Bell.

The drive-thru - along with five trade counter units - is to be built on a former sewage-treatment facility off Sturry Road - near KFC and McDonald’s.

Drivers would have noticed preliminary work taking place on-site over the past few months, with tThe first phase of underground work is underway, but now, developers have permission to build on the 3.5-acre plot.

It is due to open next spring.

Meanwhile, plans to open a Taco Bell branch in the high street remain undecided.

Speaking to the KentOnline in July, Glenbeigh director Colin Whelan said the Taco Bell is hoped to be open for business next spring.

While permission has been secured for Sturry Road, plans to open another branch of the Mexican-inspired chain in the city remain undecided.

The firm wants to take on the former Jigsaw clothing store in the centre of the high street.
