Police in Canterbury city centre as underpass taped off

Three teenagers have been arrested after a 17-year-old suffered head injuries in an alleged assault near Burger King in Canterbury city centre.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene around midday on Tuesday and taped off the St George's underpass.

An injured teenager was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, where he remains, and three youths have now been arrested on suspicion of assault.

A 17-year-old boy and 17-year old girl, both from Canterbury, and an 18-year old boy from Deal were arrested and have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police said they received a report of "a disturbance" at 11.45am.

Two ambulance were called to the scene at midday, and traffic built up.

Witnesses in the busy shopping area described a heavy police presence.

Twitter user @Hollytheplumb said: "Police everywhere in Canterbury town centre, underpass has been closed off with police tape."

Vikkie Richmond said: "Any idea what's happening in Canterbury outside Wilko? Loads of hangers on, couple ambulances and police car and van."

@SkullDog15 added: "Whats happening in Canterbury. It don't look good, police everywhere."

Kent Police tweeted at the time: "There has been a reported disturbance, officers are dealing with the incident."

Police spokesman Scarlet Jones said inquiries were ongoing.

The area was cleared at 2.20pm after forensic teams had visited the scene.
