Wickes set for new Canterbury store as planning application for old Homebase site submitted
06:10, 09 April 2020
A large superstore unit which has remained empty for more than a year is set to become a Wickes.
KentOnline previously reported how the DIY chain was in talks with Canterbury City Council over the former Homebase site in Wincheap.
Now, computer generated images show the national retailer's logo emblazoned on the exterior of the big Cow Lane unit.
The site, which boasts a large car park, was bought by the city council for £3.5 million in 2013.
Income from tenants has obviously dried up in the past year, and the empty building has been covered in graffiti.
Council spokesman Rob Davies said: "This is an important building in a prime location, and we're pleased that a high profile national retailer is set to move into the city.
"We're working closely with Wickes on this and their submission of a planning application indicates their commitment to the project."
Cllr Nick Eden-Green (Lib Dem) is "delighted" an agreement has been met.
"It was very sad when Homebase went that the council hadn't been a bit slicker at lining up a new tenant," he said.
"They knew the tenancy was coming to end yet the building remained empty for so long.
"Obviously when you know a tenancy is coming to end, one would expect the planb for a new tenant to be sorted as quickly as possible.
"So the council has been losing money during this time.
"I'm absolutely delighted to welcome Wickes to Wincheap and wish them all the success.
"They'll be a valuable asset to the area - particularly after this crisis which is going to totally change the high street."
The new store will be the eighth Wickes in the county.
The DIY firm has been contacted from comment.
