A woman has been charged with driving while using a mobile fine and being three times the alcohol limit.

Caris Turner, 26, of Shamrock Avenue, Whitstable, had been arrested for motoring offences during an operation led by volunteer police officers.

She was stopped on the Thanet Way at Beltinge, near Herne Bay, and had 110 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Ms Turner was bailed to appear before Margate magistrates on November 19.

The special constables also carried out speed checks at "key locations" in Petham and Bridge, near Canterbury, on Tuesday, resulting in a number of motorists receiving traffic offence reports.

These give drivers the option of attending a speed awareness course or paying a fine and receiving points on their driving licence.

Special Inspector Thomas Briant said: "Speeding drivers are a cause of great concern to communities across the Canterbury district and beyond, so we were pleased to be able to support our regular officers by carrying out speed checks in Petham and Bridge.

"It is disappointing that some people still decide to speed on our roads, and it is vital that we all take responsibility to help keep our roads safe.

"That is one of the reasons why it is appropriate to deal with speeding offences through educational courses because this is more likely to improve driver behaviour."

Specials are unpaid volunteers who have the same powers as regular police officers.

Many have full-time jobs and give up at least 16 hours of their own time every month to help police their local communities.
