Thousands of marauding zombies invaded the streets of Herne Bay, showing the town really does know how to get out and enjoy Halloween in style, regardless of the bad weather.

The Zombie Crawl last night rounded off an action packed half-term week of events, coordinated by the Bay Promo Team, called Halloweek.

The highlight was the Whitstable Samba Pelo Mar band, whose 40 drummers led the parade through the streets to a booming beat.

Ann Day, the group's music director, said: “It was really good to support Herne Bay, we have members from Herne Bay and from all round the area.

“We really enjoyed it. From the beginning the moment we decided to do it we knew it was the kind of event that the band members would really get into.

“We just do our normal rehearsals every Tuesday, and I wrote a mixture of four different pieces for it.

“The main thing we had to practice was not smiling! Normally we are smiling and jolly, but the face painting by Fancy Face really helped us get into character!

“I think it was amazing that people put so much effort into it. Considering the weather was a bit miserable, it was really successful, and people really got into it with their costumes.

“Everyone really enjoyed it and it was a big success, and Bay Promo Team are doing such a good job to promote Herne Bay.”

Across Herne Bay there were a range of events throughout the half term week. At Hampton Primary School there was a spooky Halloween fancy dress competition and fireworks display.

There were several events at Beach Creative such as workshops run by local artist Karen Simpson to produce Halloween items, and a pumpkin carving competition with prizes.

At St Bartholomew’s Church there was a Wizard School where children dressed up as wizards and witches to learn new spells.

Meanwhile A Bundle of Books manager Andrea White and store manager Ellie Addenbrook got donned their witch costumes for readings.

There were also events at Canterbury Garden Centre in Herne earlier in the week, where kids got to take part in workshops and meet wildlife up close, such as spooky spectacled owls.
