Canterbury Golf Club’s Enzo Avery has been named PGA South Region Trainee Assistant Professional-of-the-Year for the second year running.

Avery, 25, was presented with the award and a £500 prize at Kingswood Golf Club in Tadworth, Surrey, by Robert Maxfield, CEO of the PGA.

Now, after three years of hard graft completing a foundation degree in Professional Golf Studies, he will move on as one of only six students internationally hoping to complete a BSc honours degree and is waiting on election into full PGA membership.

The award was sponsored by golf retail group TGI. Avery is believed to be the first student to win the South region prize for the second year running in the PGA’s biggest region.

He said: “Mr Maxfield had an informal chat with me before the presentation and said ‘It’s great to see you back having won the award again.

“It’s a tough course and to have won it multiple times in this region is quite the achievement.

“I have no doubt you will be going places in the golfing world'.”

Avery added: “I’m also pursuing my dream of becoming a tour professional so, as I’m organising sponsorship, (I) hope to be playing on the PGA Clutch Tour and other professional development tours before climbing the ranks - a dream I have worked towards since I was 11-years-old.

“I’m also doing Open Championship qualifying this year and I’m working on a 12-year goal to get to the top of the game.”

Canterbury chairman Steve Eeles said: “What Enzo has done is absolutely brilliant!

“As a club, we’re immensely proud of him and his achievements, and wish him continued success in his education and whatever he does in his golfing career.”
