A day after his sensational hundred against Australia, young Kent opener Daniel Bell-Drummond was still struggling to come to terms with his magnificent achievement.

The 21-year-old smashed 127 off 112 balls, including three sixes and 21 fours, before the tourists eventually won the Ashes tour opener at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, by 255 runs.

Bell-Drummond said the day he reached three figures against the star-studded bowling attack was something he would never forget.

He said: “It was the best day of my career - there is no question about that.

“I really cannot believe I got a hundred against an attack like that - I was just in awe to be on the same field as them, let alone do what I did.

"It's a weird and wonderful feeling."

It was Bell-Drummond's seventh hundred of his first-class career and third this season.

And it wasn’t lost on Michael Clarke, with the Australian captain shaking his hand before he walked off to a standing ovation from the small crowd.

Not that Bell-Drummond remembers too much about the handshake - it was still all a bit of a blur.

He said: “To be honest, I can’t remember exactly what he said but it was something like ‘that was a brilliant knock young man, well played’ - that was a great touch from someone of his quality and calibre to say that.”
