Kent are set to be without Sam Billings for at least three months as he recovers from a dislocated shoulder sustained during Thursday's Royal London One-Day Cup clash with Glamorgan.
The skipper was forced off the field after requiring treatment within minutes of his first appearance since flying back from his time in the Indian Premier League.
His absence adds to a growing injury crisis for Kent on the back of vice-captain Joe Denly suffering a back spasm in Tuesday's defeat to Gloucestershire.
Billings was taken to hospital immediately after leaving Thursday's game before having his shoulder relocated and eventually returning to join up with his teammates at Sophia Gardens.
Director of Kent cricket Paul Downton said: "Sam has seen a specialist this morning (April 26), where he underwent a scan to assess the extent of his injury. The scan highlighted significant damage to his shoulder, meaning he will require surgical intervention. This surgery has been scheduled for next week and it is anticipated that he will be back to fitness within three – five months.
"I know I speak for everyone at Kent Cricket when I say we really feel for Sam. To have picked up this kind of injury ahead of what was set to be an exciting summer is tough. However, I have no doubt that his dedicated professionalism and strong mindset, will see him working hard behind the scenes to return back to fitness as soon as possible."
The injury means Billings will also miss England's upcoming ODI against Ireland as well as the Vitality IT20 match against Pakistan, with Surrey wicketkeeper Ben Foakes having been named as his replacement.
Kent are due to host Pakistan in a Tour Match at Beckenham on Saturday April 27.
