Ex-Kent bowler awaits tumour test

00:00, 05 October 2001

FORMER Kent spinner Richard Davis says the support of ex-county team-mate Alan Igglesden has been a great help following the discovery he has a tumour on his brain. Davis, 35, who lives at Shepherdswell, near Dover, sought medical help after suffering two epileptic seizures and has undergone two brain scans.

He is unable to drive but is otherwise carrying on his life as normal. Davis, who made a brief playing return for Leicestershire in August, said: "Basically I have a small, low grade tumour on the right hand side of the brain but the prognosis looks good.’’

Davis and Igglesden both joined the Kent staff on the same day and Igglesden himself was diagnosed with a brain tumour a couple of years ago. Davis said: “We’ve already been out for dinner and Iggy’s been a great help pointing me in the direction of the right books and generally putting my mind at rest.

“If anything Iggy’s prognosis was worse than mine and it helps to see how well he’s come through it.’’

Davis made his Kent debut in 1986 and had eight seasons with the county before joining Warwickshire. He also played for Sussex and Gloucestershire and ended a four-year absence from the first-class game earlier this summer when he answered an SOS from Leicestershire, who had an injury crisis.

This season he has also played Minor Counties cricket for Berkshire and in the Forester Kent League for Dartford.
