Captain Michael Farrer was pleased with his Canterbury side’s firepower as they doubled their goals-for tally in one afternoon against Loughborough Students at Polo Farm on Saturday.

On his first appearance of the season after returning from Australia, Liam Foster opened the scoring while overseas player Mickel Pierre, also in the side for the first time after arriving from Trinidad, doubled the advantage and grabbed a late second after Isaac O’Connor had bagged the third.

Farrer said: “I said last week that having Liam and Mickel would give us a boost going forward and so it proved with both of them on the scoresheet. I haven’t scored yet this season, so hopefully I can get on the scoresheet myself this weekend.”

The city club travel to Cannock on Sunday to face a side unusually waiting for their first win of the campaign and one place below eighth-placed Canterbury.

Farrer said: “It’s always a tough game there, they are generally a pretty similar team to us. It’s an important one for us, they haven’t picked up any points and if we could win that would be six points between the sides and we’d climb up the table.

“It’s still very early though, it’s not do-or-die yet.”

GB youngster Ross Gilham-Jones should return after a tour to Malaysia.
